In this class you will be introduced to painting with watercolor, including techniques in color mixing, observational painting, and composition. At your own pace you will learn how to paint still life using watercolor in a relaxed and welcoming environment. This class will cover wet on wet and wet on dry techniques, masking, pressing, shading and light techniques, ink washes, and pattern making. You will come away from this class with many beautiful watercolor paintings of your own and a greater understanding and appreciation for the medium of watercolor. This class is suitable for beginners and can be adjusted for all levels of experience. This class is for adults. This class is taught by Brooke Lambert. Brooke is a professional printmaker and painter. She holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and shows her work widely in New England, New York, and beyond. Brooke works in Studio 291 at Western Avenue Studios & Lofts in Lowell, MA. She is currently represented by The Society of American Graphic Artists and Equity Gallery in New York, NY and Gallery House, contemporary art gallery in Lexington MA. She has thirteen years of teaching experience and currently teaches adult art workshops and holds artist demos at several locations in New England.

Let’s talk about your favorite comics! Bring in a graphic novel and share your thoughts on why it’s great – or even why it’s terrible. Each month will feature a different reading challenge – you get to pick any comic that you think matches the theme! Celebrate comics with snacks, books, and maybe even the chance to make one yourself! This month’s theme, we're celebrating women artists! Bring in your favorite graphic novel or manga from a female creator and share it. Snacks are provided. This program is for ages 9-12. Kids in 6th, 7th and 8th grade can come to the Library to create hand-made cards and wrapping paper using print-making techniques! Snacks provided. No registration necessary.

Join guide Stefanie Haug while exploring our neighborhood nature and celebrating Elderhood. As a group we'll connect with nature and the neighborhood mindfully with a gentle walk and draw on contemplative practices. What to bring: layered clothing, comfortable shoes and water. Do you sometimes struggle to find the information you need from websites? In this class, you’ll learn helpful tips and tricks to search more effectively, use filters and sorting tools, and explore other features. Bring extra seeds, plants or harvested items from your garden to swap at the Library! We will also have seeds, soil and biodegradable pots so you can plant flowers and vegetables to grow in the late summer and fall. This program is open to people of all ages! No registration is required.

Calling all plant lovers! Add some green into your home! Bring your own plants to share propagules with others or come to pot a new plant baby for your home collection. We'll have a small collection of house plant propagules, along with soil and plastic planting containers. Attendees are welcome to bring their own pots as well.

You’re invited to our September Brewery Book Club, where Lamplighter and the Cambridge Public Library team up to highlight contemporary works from marginalized voices while having a beer. We meet at Lamplighter Brewing Co., 284 Broadway, in the back taproom. This month we’ll read The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. Copies of the book are available at the Main Library Q&A Desk. Join the Cambridge Public Library in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by welcoming Valeria Luiselli—the acclaimed author of several books, including Tell Me How It Ends and Lost Children Archive, the recipient of the 2021 Dublin Literary Award—for a reading from her new novel, Beginning Middle End. In Beginning Middle End, which received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and Booklist, Luiselli returns to the road novel form which she innovated in Lost Children Archive. Called "a beautiful, maybe perfect, novel," Beginning Middle End follows a mother and daughter on a quest to start over and find for themselves a new story, in the process weaving "together four generations of women through archaeology, mythology, and the natural world" (W Magazine). After reading from her work, Luiselli will sit in conversation with Eloisa Amezcua, an award-winning poet, translator, and author of Fighting Is Like a Wife. An audience Q&A and book signing will follow. Registration is required.
