On Thursday, May 15th the Cambridge Police hosted our Community Stakeholders Event at The Foundry on Rogers St. Organized by the Family & Social Justice Section, this event is an opportunity for various civic groups, community members and business leaders to come together in a discussion of various topics related to our local criminal justice system.

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic process that empowers community members to help decide how to spend part of a public budget. The City will allocate a record-high $2 million for this year’s process, which doubles the previous budget of $1 million. The PB outreach team will be collecting ideas from the Cambridge community through direct outreach in public spaces and at public events Sept. 11-Oct. 9, 2023.

Gold Star Pool, located at 123 Berkshire Street, is open every summer for Cambridge residents to enjoy open swim. The facility has two ADA-compliant pools: a Beginner Pool (maximum depth of 3-6 ft.) and a Lap Pool.

Darning is a fabric mending technique that involves reinforcing or re-weaving a portion of fabric by hand. In this workshop, we’ll learn how to visibly mend holes and weak areas in sweaters, socks, and other knit fabrics using seed stitch and square darning techniques. You’ll leave with a sampler of both techniques that you can refer back to when tackling your own darning projects at home. Suitable for beginners with little or no darning experience, though it does help if you have some experience with hand sewing. Registration is required.

For 14 years volunteers have been coming together on MLK DAY to provide critical necessities to people served by more than 70 organizations in Cambridge and surrounding towns. In 2024, more than 1,250 volunteers lent their helping hands during the Cambridge MLK Day of Service. The annual goal is to create an experience that brings the community together for the sole purpose of caring for our neighbors.

In Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Labs, students dive into the exciting world of social robots—machines designed to interact, learn, and connect. From brainstorming ideas to building prototypes, students explore how AI and robotics can foster fairer, more inclusive communities. They design robots that serve as friendly companions, offering support, connection, and solutions to real-world challenges. Teens in 7th and 8th grade are invited to learn more and apply on the iFp website: Innovators for Purpose. Skills Learned: Human-Centered Design, Mechanics, Electronics, Computer Programming, AI, and more. Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program.
