Darning is a fabric mending technique that involves reinforcing or re-weaving a portion of fabric by hand. In this workshop, we’ll learn how to visibly mend holes and weak areas in sweaters, socks, and other knit fabrics using seed stitch and square darning techniques. You’ll leave with a sampler of both techniques that you can refer back to when tackling your own darning projects at home. Suitable for beginners with little or no darning experience, though it does help if you have some experience with hand sewing. Registration is required.

Join us for activities celebrating the theme of "Plant a Seed, Read" all summer long. Today's activity is perler bead plants. Work with perler beads to follow a pattern and create a flower, fruit or your own unique design. We'll fuse the finished product into place for you to take home. Recommended for children ages 6-12 and their caregivers. It's time for a wild rumpus! Join in a game of musical charades featuring quirky 17th century chamber music mimicking members of the animal kingdom and other zaniness. Sandra Boynton's simple yet poignant counting book Hippos Go Berserk and Maurice Sendak's timeless classic Where the Wild Things Are may leave you hungry for a bedtime snack! Music of Heinrich Biber and Nicola Matteis performed on violin and theorbo/baroque guitar. No registration required. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. This program will replace Valente's weekly Sing-Along on Tuesday, June 9.

Join the Cambridge Public Library in celebrating Native American Heritage Month by welcoming Morgan Talty, author of the award-winning story collection, Night of the Living Rez, as well as the novel, Fire Exit, published just last summer. Fire Exit—which Booklist called "tender and heartbreaking" in a starred review—is a novel about family secrets and how they inform the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and where we live. After reading from his work, Talty will sit in conversation with Nina MacLaughlin, author or Winter Solstice, followed by a short audience Q&A and book signing. Registration is required.
