Life-Saving Devices in Cambridge: Automatic External Defibrillators & Stop the Bleed Kits
Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are portable, life-saving devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, a medical condition in which the heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly. The combination of CPR and early defibrillation is effective in saving lives when used in the first few minutes following a collapse from sudden cardiac arrest.
The City of Cambridge has expanded access to lifesaving emergency equipment by installing outdoor AEDs in parks and open spaces across the City. These AEDs have been placed in every City of Cambridge athletic field, including all locations where soccer, football, baseball, softball, basketball, tennis, and golf are played. This ensures that emergency medical equipment is available wherever residents and visitors gather for sports and recreation.
Each outdoor AED is located in a highly visible locked cabinet, which is temperature-controlled for year-round availability. In an emergency, anyone can access an AED by calling 911 and receiving a code to unlock the cabinet.
In addition to an AED, each cabinet will also contain a Stop-the-Bleed kit. These kits provide basic emergency supplies that can help control severe bleeding until emergency responders arrive.
