Opportunities to Volunteer

Outdoors

  • The Cambridge Water Department has volunteer programs at Fresh Pond Reservation.

  • The Cambridge City Growers are a group of volunteers across Cambridge who plant neighborhood gardens to increase access to healthy, organic, and locally grown food.

  • Green Cambridge works on sustainability projects across the city.

  • You can volunteer as a forest friend to help establish new trees and by watering and tending to them.

  • Adopt a tree to help the City’s Urban Forestry team water, mulch and weed all of the City’s new and young trees.

  • Help the health of our local rivers and reduce street flooding by becoming a Storm Steward. Claim (and name!) a storm drain in your neighborhood and make sure it’s clear of debris, particularly ahead of rain events.

  • The Cambridge Fire Department’s Adopt-A-Hydrant program lets you search for a hydrant near an address and commit to keeping it free of snow and accessible throughout the winter season.

Join a City Committee

  • The Cambridge Climate Committee meets monthly and helps the City reduce climate impacts, lower greenhouse gas emissions, increase equity, and serve as a partner to other communities.

  • Join the Committee on Public Planting. Members who represent Cambridge neighborhoods review public planting plans, promote and advocate for a healthy urban forest, and advise the City on effective maintenance of public plantings.

  • The Recycling Advisory Committee provides advice, recommendations, and assistance to the Department of Public Works regarding recycling, composting, reuse, and waste reduction.

  • The Bicycle Committee works to improve conditions for Cambridge bicyclists and promote bicycling as a means of transportation. It reviews City plans for road construction, comments on bicycle-related ordinances, and participates in public events.

  • The Cambridge Pedestrian Committee works to create a more comfortable environment for walking in the City. The group advises on the design of roadway projects, helps develop policies and guidelines related to pedestrians, and identifies intersections where it is difficult to walk.

  • The Transit Advisory Committee offers feedback on city and state projects, and presents new ideas on improving public transit. It also gives feedback on transit service reliability and improvements.

Walking

  • Cambridge has been called a “walker’s paradise,” and named the most walkable city in the country. Following its pedestrian plan, Cambridge has made critical upgrades to infrastructure, from enhancing crosswalks and pedestrian ramps to installing raised crosswalks, which help slow down vehicles and make street crossings safer for everyone.

  • Find maps, walking tours, and other resources here and here to get started. And, if you enjoy identifying tree species while walking, this interactive map will help.

Biking

  • Cambridge has been named one of the country’s best cities to bike. The City’s Cycling Safety Ordinance requires it to build a network of separated bike lanes. Explore Cambridge using this virtual tour of historic sites from the local Suffrage Movement, or this ride featuring Cambridge health facilities that are some of the best hospitals and medical programs in the world. • Bluebikes offers a bike share program available in Cambridge and 12 nearby towns. It offers reduced monthly and annual fees for low-income residents enrolled in Bluebikes’ Income-Eligible Program.

  • Eligible residents can access refurbished bicycles through Cambridge Bicycle Access Programs. This program partners with Cambridge Bike Give Back. Income-eligible residents can apply for vouchers to buy new bikes from local shops. Businesses can also apply for vouchers to purchase electric cargo bikes for deliveries.
