Cambridge’s Annual Holocaust Commemoration Tuesday, May 3, 7-9 p.m.
Temple Beth Shalom, 8 Tremont St., Cambridge
Recalling all who perished during the Holocaust, this year’s program features an evening of music, candle lighting, and remembrance.
The guest speaker is Aron Greenfield, who was born in Szczakowa, Poland in 1926, and had just had his bar mitzvah when the German Army invaded Poland in September 1939. As he said to the Norwood Transcript in 2014, "I was in nine concentration camps. I'm not going to tell you I'm tougher than others. I was luckier than others." After being liberated at the end of World War II, he spent time in a displaced persons camp in Austria before making his way to the United States. Making a new life for himself in Massachusetts, he continues to work, running a shop in Norwood with his wife. He has also made it part of his life’s work to share his story, especially with younger people, schools, colleges, and other venues.
Music will be provided by cellist Hsin Hou Sun, the Cambridge Rindge and Latin String Orchestra, the Cambridge Community Chorus, and A Besere Velt. Poetry will be shared by Margareta Matache and Mojdeh Rohani.
The program is free, open to all, and wheelchair accessible. It welcomes all communities of Cambridge – including children and adults and people of all faiths and traditions.
Temple Beth Shalom is located just off Broadway at 8 Tremont St., between Hampshire St. and Broadway (Tremont St. is one block east of Prospect St., between Central and Inman squares). Limited free parking is available.
