We’re Adding Separated Bike Lanes to Part of Main Street – Take the Design Options Survey

The City of Cambridge is looking for your thoughts on street design options the Main Street Safety Improvement Project.

About the Project:

The Main Street Safety Improvement Project will add separated bike lanes on Main Street between Massachusetts Avenue and Portland Street in 2024. This quick-build project will change the layout of the street with new pavement markings, modified traffic signals, and flex posts. We will also improve existing crosswalks and make changes to parking and loading. 

These changes will align with the Cambridge Bicycle Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan and will meet the requirements of the Cambridge Cycling Safety Ordinance.

Separated bike lanes are wider than regular bike lanes because they include an additional buffer area and flex-posts to create distance between people biking and people driving or parking. In order to fit separated bike lanes on this section of Main Street, we will have to remove much of the existing parking/loading. 

How many parking spaces remain will depend on where they are located. The City is looking for feedback on layout options for the street. Take the survey by Sunday, December 17 for a chance to weigh in.

The survey is available in English, Amharic, Haitian Creole, and Spanish.
