Out of Time, a band of Harvard University’s Jazz Combo Initiative students, performs free concerts on

• Thursday, April 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m. (rain date: April 20), at Central Square’s Jill Rhone Brown Park, 900 Main St., across from the fire station on Massachusetts Avenue

and

• Friday, April 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m. (rain date: April 21), in Harvard Square’s Smith Center Plaza on Mt. Auburn Street at the corner of Dunster Street, in front of the restaurant Oggi.

The performances are presented by Cambridge Arts, the Central Square Business Improvement District; and the Dexter Gordon Centennial Project in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month and the 100th birth-year and centennial anniversary of the life and legacy of tenor saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and Academy Award nominated actor Dexter Gordon. The performances also aim to help activate Cambridge businesses.

Out of Time is rooted in the swing and blues traditions, but also explores post-bop and modern funk, plus some original arrangements and compositions. Out of Time band director, jazz saxophonist Don Braden, will sit in with the band to celebrate the great Dexter Gordon.

The events are free and open to all.

The performers for both days are Don Braden (director, tenor sax and flute) special guest for Dexter Gordon Tribute; Marc Courtemanche (bass); Caleb Fried (trumpet); Will Kissinger (piano); Jack Meyer (drums); and Robert Wachen (alto sax). On April 13, Mai Nguyen (flute/vocals) and Nico Vallenas (tenor sax) will also join the band. On April 14, Jamin Liu (alto sax) will perform with the band.
