Join the Library as we are excited to welcome community member and advocate for spending time outdoors, Michelle Holmes.  Early, she became enamored with the outdoors when her mother introduced her to the Scouts and to camping. As an adult she became a Scout volunteer for her sons and later on, for other youth in Cambridge MA. Michelle started hiking the 2,190-mile Appalachian trail in 2007 at age 52, and continued in sections over a period of 13 years.  She completed her journey in 2019 (at the age of 64), concluding the latter-half of the miles on two artificial knees.

Michelle is a physician and epidemiologist who believes in the healing power of Nature.  She is particularly passionate that it be accessible to those who feel excluded, particularly Black and other People of Color.  She will be sharing her stories from the trail and how we can support in making hiking trails more welcoming and accessible to communities of color.
