The Cambridge Department of Public Works (DPW) will be at the Port Party!  Come learn about the City’s Stormwater Management Program on Thursday, October 21st, from 4:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. (rain date Tuesday, October 26th), We will be at Clement Morgan Park, 60 Columbia Street mixed in with all the excitement.

The City manages approximately 100 miles of stormwater pipe and 38 stormwater outfalls to the Charles River, Alewife Brook, Fresh Pond, and Jerry’s Pond. Through implementing its Stormwater Management Program (SWMP), the City is implementing actions that mitigate flooding and improve water quality in our City’s waterways. DPW will highlight the City’s SWMP through an informative display about stormwater, sharing information about stormwater management activities and accomplishments, providing materials highlighting how community members can be environmental stewards and how water is impacted by stormwater runoff through an interactive model showing how water gets to our rivers.

The City developed its SWMP based on the requirements established under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Phase II (NPDES Phase II).  NPDES Phase II SWMP provides a framework for improving the quality of stormwater runoff through the folllowing six minimum control measures:

  • public education and outreach
  • public participation and involvement
  • illicit discharge detection and elimination
  • construction site runoff control
  • post-construction site runoff control
  • pollution prevention and good housekeeping measures

Come learn about what the City has been doing and how you can help.
