With each passing year, the impact of climate change on low-income communities of color and immigrant communities becomes more harmful and dramatic. How we address that impact is one of the most pressing civil rights challenges we face today. The Boston-based organization, Lawyers for Civil Rights (LCR), seeks to address the disproportionate impact of climate change on low-income communities of color and immigrant communities, and invest in creative and courageous actions in climate resilience planning, decision-making, policy-making, and legal action that include directly-impacted individuals. Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, Executive Director of LCR, will lead us through a discussion on race and climate justice and the vital work LCR does to combat racial injustice.
Born in Costa Rica, and raised in Chelsea, MA, Iván Espinoza-Madrigal is an expert in legal protections for people of color and immigrants. He has filed and won dozens of life-changing and law-changing cases across the country on behalf of people of color and immigrants and advises federal and state policymakers on the legal needs of marginalized communities. His work is regularly featured in publications such as the New York Times and The Boston Globe and he was recently named one of the most influential people in Boston 2021 by Boston Magazine.
