    • Morning Market: The Work of Women an Exhibition by Lori Lander

      "Morning Market: The Work of Women," by Cambridge atist Lori Lander, is a celebration of women at work in daily markets across several continents. This exhibition of 12 oil paintings will be will be on display at the Main Library, from October 15 through November 15. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, October 20, from 4-6 p.m. in the Community Room. Lander will give a lecture on Monday, November 7, from 5-6 p.m., in the Lecture Hall.       We invite children and their caregivers for 20-25 minutes of stories and songs. Children ages 2-3 and their caregivers. This program can accommodate 45 people. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis on the day of the program. The entire party must be present to receive a ticket. This program starts promptly.       In this 90-minute class, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

      This week's selection: Bret Harte, selections Reading Interests: We concentrate on Great Books in the following areas: a long novel over the summer, two sections of poetry and short stories, a book of the Bible, a Shakespeare play, an ancient and modern drama, a work of science, a smaller work of fiction, an even smaller work of fiction, and a rotating mix of politics, philosophy, and religion. Authors read in the past five years include Dickens, Keats and Yeats, O'Connor and Munro, Ecclesiastes, Sophocles and August Wilson, Darwin, Austen, Duras, The Federalist Papers, and Arendt. How to get the print book: Copies of the reading are set aside at the Main Library. Visit the Main Library at 449 Broadway during current service hours and a staff member can help you get a copy.
