    • Marking Their Place in History: Cambridge Black Trailblazers

      Join us for an exhibit of Cambridge Black Trailblazers, curated by the Cambridge Black History Project, on display at the Main Library from January 26 to February 28. Fifteen extraordinary Black Cantabrigians, whose lives and accomplishments have often been overlooked, will be featured in this exhibition: Roy Allen, Actor, TV Stage Manager, Director, Producer, Creator Joyce London Alexander, Chief US Magistrate Judge Barbara Ward Armstrong, Artist, Musician, Creator Olive Benson, Innovative Hair-Care Entrepreneur Calvin Burnett, Daring Artist and Gifted Teacher Dr. June Christmas, Pioneer in Public Health Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes, Faith and Action Charles LeRoy Gittens, Secret Service Agent Johnny Hodges, Jazz Saxophonist Extraordinaire Kittie Towle Knox, Cycling Pioneer and Champion Racer Gertrude Wright Morgan, Teacher and a Force for Change Henry F. Owens, Entrepreneur Elizabeth Miller Rawlins, Teacher, Educational Leader, and Advocate for Educational Equity and Opportunity Gus Solomons Jr., Contemporary Dancer, Innovator, Mentor Leon West, Chef The exhibit is on display in the lobby, on the second floor, and on the gallery wall on L2. Illustrated bookmarks, created by the Cambridge Black History Project detailing the lives of these Black Trailblazers, will be available. Join us for an opening reception on January 26 at 6:30 pm.

      Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology, and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects. Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part of Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences.       Daniel Chong, violin| Ken Hamao, violin| Jessica Bodner, viola| Kee-Hyun Kim, cello Internationally recognized for their “fearless, yet probingly beautiful” (The Strad) performances, the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation, dedicated purely to the sound and depth of their music. Inspired performances and exceptional musicianship are hallmarks of the Quartet, having appeared at the world’s most illustrious venues since its founding in 2002. Founded and currently based in Boston, the Parker Quartet’s numerous honors include winning the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the Grand Prix and Mozart Prize at France’s Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, and Chamber Music America’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award.  The members of the Parker Quartet serve as Professors of the Practice and Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music.       Learn to use a sewing machine at the O'Neill Branch! This is a 4-week series of 60-minute classes, designed for ages 7-18. Ages 7-11 must participate with an adult. Ages 12-18 may participate alone or with an adult. Please only register if you will be able to attend all four sessions. In this series, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. We will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when problems arise. As we learn together, we’ll work on one or two simple sewing projects. Participants may use this series to become badged for the sewing machines at the Hive. If you wish to do this, please complete the Hive Safety Training before the end of the workshop series. This series is part of the O'Neill Community Quilt Project.       This week's selection: Frederick Douglass' "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" Reading Interests: We concentrate on Great Books in the following areas: a long novel over the summer, two sections of poetry and short stories, a book of the Bible, a Shakespeare play, an ancient and modern drama, a work of science, a smaller work of fiction, an even smaller work of fiction, and a rotating mix of politics, philosophy, and religion. Authors read in the past five years include Dickens, Keats and Yeats, O'Connor and Munro, Ecclesiastes, Sophocles and August Wilson, Darwin, Austen, Duras, The Federalist Papers, and Arendt. How to get the print book: Copies of the reading are set aside at the Main Library. Visit the Main Library at 449 Broadway during current service hours and a staff member can help you get a copy. How to register: Registration is required. Click the registration link below to register. This is a hybrid event. A Zoom link will be sent to all registered participants 1 hour before the event.
