    • Wellness for Seniors: Tai Chi Paradigm (Main)

      Sponsored by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation Join us in this 12-week Tai Chi practice, which focuses on the mind and body connection. Tai Chi is a fluid sequence of movements choreographed in a low impact routine. Sifu Mynor Diaz has been learning and teaching Tai Chi classes for over 20 years. He has taught classes at five VA Boston Healthcare System locations and at Senior Centers. Note: We will be running two separate Tai Chi Paradigm series this year, a Wednesday series and a Friday series. Please register for only one of the series. This is an in-person event.

      In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class.       Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology, and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects. Teens are invited to learn more and apply on the iFp website: Innovators for Purpose. Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part of Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences.       Exhibit Hours Monday - Thursday: 5-9 Saturday: 9-5 Sunday: 1-5 Kristen Emack has been photographing her daughter and nieces for over a decade. "There is something sacred about the lives of girls, and their innocent, confident relationships to themselves, their world and one another is gravitational," explains Emack. She has captured the girls' childhood in an unfiltered way as they move with confidence throughout Cambridge and their environment. Her work is an undeniable celebration of Black girlhood. "There are notable bodies of work about girlhood, but Cousins is unique. It chronicles the lives of girls of color, which is a perspective that still remains under-embraced," writes Emack. "Additionally, each frame is wholly female. Angst or distraction does not enter the frame. Instead it's their connection that stays in focus, their adolescent changes are organic, subtle and unprovocative." Emack is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow, a MacDowell Fellow, and a Mass Cultural Council Fellow. Her work has been featured in Vogue Italia and National Geographic and has been exhibited across the United States, Northern Europe and the UK. This exhibit, Emack's first in Cambridge, features the Library's newly acquired photographs from Cousins and celebrates Emack's work in the community. View these exciting new additions to the permanent collection of Library's Archives and Special Collections on display at the Main Library on L2. Join us for an opening reception on September 21 at 6:30 pm with a panel discussion by Kristen Emack, Dr. Alisa Victoria Prince, and cousins Apple Emack, Leyah Bernard, Kayla Bernard and Layla Bernard, as they discuss the process, inspiration, and impact of Cousins.

    • Cambridge Cooks: The Basics of Cream-based Soups (Main)

      What are you going to do with all those fresh veggies from the Farmer's Market? You could eat them raw, but what about creating a delicious, hearty, vegetable soup? Chef Anthony Haley teaches us how to make the most of our fall vegetables by turning them into a cream-based soup. This live cooking demonstration will be followed by a free tasting and Q&A with the chef. About the chef: Chef Anthony Haley is a Boston native who obtained his Associates degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson and Wales University – Providence in 2008. He went on to earn his Bachelors in Culinary Nutrition in 2010. After working in Research and Development for Heinz North America in Pittsburgh, PA, Anthony returned home to Boston. He spent many years working for Legal Seafoods, primarily training and opening new locations. In 2015, Chef Anthony opened Antonio’s Bacaro, a Venetian wine bar and restaurant in Hyde Park, where he was the Executive Chef. Anthony competed on the hit show “Blind Kitchen” in 2022 and has appeared on CBS Boston for several cooking segments. Chef Anthony is now teaching Professional and Recreational Classes at Cambridge School of Culinary Arts.
