What does it take to be one of the most data-driven cities in the Americas? For Cambridge, the answer is clear: a relentless commitment to turning numbers into action—and action into impact.
In January, Cambridge joined an elite group of just five cities across North and South America to earn Platinum Certification from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ What Works Cities program—the highest honor for cities using data to transform government. The recognition places Cambridge alongside major innovators like New York City, New York, Phoenix, Tempe, and Glendale, Arizona, proving that big ideas thrive in cities of all sizes.
From Silver to Gold to Platinum: A Journey of Innovation
Cambridge’s rise to Platinum wasn’t overnight. The City first earned Silver Certification in 2020, then climbed to Gold in 2021, 2023, and 2024. Now, Platinum status confirms what residents have long experienced: decisions here aren’t made on guesswork—they’re grounded in evidence.
“Platinum Certification is a powerful testament to our dedication to evidence-based policymaking, accountability, and service excellence,” said City Manager Yi-An Huang. “It reflects the hard work of our staff and the leadership commitment that has steadily strengthened our data practices—from Silver to Gold to now Platinum.”
Why It Matters for Residents
Data isn’t just a buzzword in Cambridge—it’s shaping everyday life. Take the Cambridge Preschool Program, launched in 2024. After reviewing national research showing universal pre-K boosts literacy, narrows achievement gaps, and drives long-term success, the City acted. Today, more than 1,450 children have enrolled in free, high-quality preschool—giving families peace of mind and kids a stronger start.
Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui sees data as a bridge between City Hall and the community:
“Through investments like the Cambridge Open Data program and annual resident satisfaction surveys, we’re building a more transparent and accountable local government. This recognition reflects Cambridge’s leadership and serves as a model for cities across the country.”
The Gold Standard of Governance
The What Works Cities Certification program, launched by Bloomberg Philanthropies and led by Results for America, sets the international benchmark for data excellence. To reach Platinum, cities must meet 85% or more of 43 rigorous criteria—from using data to allocate funding to engaging residents in decision-making.
For Cambridge, that means every policy, every program, and every dollar spent is backed by insight—not intuition. And that’s something worth celebrating.
