Burhan Azeem

City Councillor Burhan Azeem

Burhan Azeem is serving his second term on the Cambridge City Council as the youngest councillor in the City's history.

As the chair of the Transportation and Public Utilities Committee, Burhan aims to promote safer streets for all users, improve our public transportation system, and push the envelope with municipal broadband and other initiatives fit for Cambridge and all its residents.

When he was four years old, Burhan and his family immigrated to the United States from Multan, Pakistan. Growing up, he shared a 3-bedroom house with 11 people. Housing insecurity and the constant fear of eviction shaped his childhood, which planted the seed for his commitment to ensuring housing security for all. Burhan has been on the board of A Better Cambridge and started the nonprofit Abundant Housing MA to address our regional housing crisis, all while growing a COVID care startup from six to hundreds as an early employee.

Burhan received a full scholarship to MIT where he studied material sciences with an interest in developing more sustainable energy sources to combat climate change. An engineer by day and a volunteer EMT at night, he has gotten to know the City from inside an ambulance helping residents who were at their most vulnerable. This opened his eyes to the importance of public safety.

Burhan is focused on issues of housing affordability, transportation, public safety, climate change, and Universal Pre-K.
