Cambridge STEAM Initiative Vision

Cambridge STEAM Initiative Logo

The Cambridge STEAM Initiative envisions a day when Cambridge residents most impacted by systemic inequities have access to high quality STEAM programming, resources, and skill-building opportunities that will provide a pathway towards social and economic mobility. We believe that by engaging families in quality STEAM programs and by creating purposeful partnerships across our community, we can achieve the following goals:

  1. All residents will have equitable access to quality STEAM learning experiences;
  2. All students will graduate with high levels of STEAM literacy, able to be engaged and responsible citizens in an increasingly technologically-driven society and empowered to make decisions about what they want to do;
  3. The local pipeline to Cambridge's STEAM workforce will reflect the diversity of the community;
  4. Cambridge will be recognized nationally as an innovative city that is a leader in both STEAM industry and STEAM education.

To move toward this vision, we focus on:

  • Fostering purposeful partnerships with stakeholders in STEAM-related industries, the Cambridge Public School District, the City of Cambridge, higher education institutions, and community-based organizations to shift the STEAM ecosystem towards racial justice;
  • Creating spaces of belonging for young people and other residents where they are seen and valued as multifaceted individuals;
  • Supporting educators to integrate STEAM Habits of Mind and Practices into their learning and teaching spaces;
  • Holding ourselves accountable to the residents, families, and young people that we serve.

The Cambridge Public Library provides a doorway to equitable opportunity and learning for everyone. As a champion of literacy, the Library enables patrons of all ages to acquire and expand their STEAM literacy skills through resources in the form of high-quality programs, robust collections, dedicated spaces, and professional staff.
