The High School Equivalency (HSE) Credential Program at the Community Learning Center (CLC) has over 50 students taking classes this year. Some students are new to the CLC, and some have been taking classes for several years. The beginning of the school year is an opportunity for renewed commitment for all students.
Students in the HSE program take math, reading, and science classes to prepare to earn the High School Equivalency Credential. Earlier this month, there was an orientation for students in the HSE program to help them succeed and get their GED or HiSET this year. During the event, students got their schedules and learned about the program. They met their teachers and classmates and got advice from program graduates.
The HSE education advisor, Ava, shared tips for student persistence. “Persistence” means to continue even when things are difficult. “If you want your high school credential, you have to get it. There are no excuses. Some students take longer, and some students are much faster,” explained Ava. “Don’t you ever compare yourself to any other students. It’s all about you. You are in competition with no one else but yourself. I’m going to be your best cheerleader!”
Students asked questions to three CLC graduates who recently passed their HiSET exams. They asked questions like, “What test was the hardest? What motivated you to keep coming to class?”
Kenia graduated from the program in June. She explained why she decided to get her HiSET after working at a salon for 22 years. “I hurt my shoulder and so I needed to change my career,” she explained. “I had wanted to do my GED for a long time. But now I had to do it, and everybody was so helpful.” Kenia is now earning her associate degree at community college.
The HSE graduates highlighted the value of persistence during difficult times. They also encouraged students to stay committed by attending class and remaining engaged.
Kenia gave an example of how important it is to come to class: “My college teachers talk about the same things [CLC teacher] Abra taught in science classes here at the CLC! You guys have to pay attention to the classes.”
