Committee: Environment
Cost: $75,000
Location: To be determined based on need and impact assessments.
Short Description: Pollinator gardens are gardens specifically for native plant species that provide pollinator resources for local wildlife. This project will design and plant a pollinator garden within a city part to attract and nourish native pollinators!
Long Description:
Support the City’s pollinator populations! There are currently more than 70 types of pollinators currently deemed endangered or threatened in the U.S. By establishing a local pollinator garden, Cambridge can play a part in helping pollinators survive and thrive. Local pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, rely on the food and resources of different pollinator plants. Let’s keep these pollinators in Cambridge and attract more by ensuring they have readily available food sources.
This funding will support the maintenance of the City’s existing pollinator gardens and help with the creation of new pollinator gardens within parks throughout Cambridge. These gardens would include wildflowers, milkweed, and other pollinator-friendly plants to support and nourish our existing pollinators and attract more. This will provide pollinators with nectar and pollen as helpful food sources.
By planting pollinator gardens throughout the City, we are increasing biodiversity, improving our air quality, and helping absorb heat in the warmer months which is a benefit to all Cambridge residents. These gardens can help beautify our parks as well.
