Committee: Facilities, Parks, and Recreation
Cost: $15,000
Location: Cambridge Public Libraries for up to three years.
Short Description: Let's support astronomy and STEAM programs at Cambridge Public Libraries to help teach about the wonders of the night sky in partnership with local astronomy and STEAM organizations.
Long Description:
In 1925, Dr. Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin was the first person to earn a PhD in astronomy from Radcliffe College of Harvard University. In her doctorate thesis, she proposed that stars were composed primarily of hydrogen and helium. To honor the achievements of Dr. Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, this proposal aims to support free astronomy and other STEAM events with the Cambridge Public Libraries. These events will inspire and educate the public while providing people the opportunity to work with experts in their field and learn to build or utilize important technology like telescopes.
This program would be facilitated by the Library which would partner with local external organizations with the required expertise, resources, and volunteers to run the program. The Library would help provide space to run the events, promotional support through its website, and event supplies to ensure everyone is having a good time.
This program would not only increase STEAM education and engagement across all ages in the community but also allow residents to appreciate the wonder and beauty of the night sky.
