Concrete Barriers for Bike Lanes ($150,000)

Location: To be determined based on need and impact.

Cost: $150,000

Committee: Transportation, Streets, and Sidewalks

Short Description: Purchase and place concrete barriers to divide roads from bike lanes. Concrete barriers are a durable solution for improving bike safety and may reduce the cost of maintaining bollards.

Long Description: Many bikers feel unsafe even on separated bike lanes. To address this, this project will add concrete barriers along bike lanes in more dangerous areas. The city currently uses paint, flex posts, and concrete barriers to demark bike lanes. Of these three options, concrete barriers are safest because they provide tangible separation between cars and bikes. This helps to prevent accidents such as doorings and sideswipes or even collisions. Concrete barriers also have lower maintenance costs than flex posts and bike lane paint. These barriers will provide more protection for bikers and be easier to maintain compared to flex posts and paint.
