Residential Rat Control ($110,000)

Location: Citywide at qualifying residential properties for three years.

Cost: $110,000

Committee: Environment

Short Description: Buy and maintain 25-30 electric rat traps to place outside residential homes that have ongoing rat problems.

Long Description: If funded, this idea would allow qualifying renters and property owners to place an electric Smart Box rat trap on their property. Qualifying properties would include those that have aged out of the existing Private Property Rodent Control Program and continue to have a persistent rodent issue despite implementing all recommendations from inspectors.

Electric Smart Box rat traps are currently used across Cambridge as a clean and environmentally-friendly way to curb rodent issues without putting poison into the food chain. These boxes are not only effective at trapping rats but also collect data which allows the city to track the number of rats trapped. The Smart Boxes cost $100 per month to maintain, so this pilot program would fund 25-30 Smart Boxes for 3 years.
