Supporting Continuous Access to School Supplies ($12,000)

Location: Cambridge Public Schools for three years.

Cost: $12,000

Committee: Community Resources

Short Description: Provide school and craft supplies in school libraries and classrooms so all students can use them. The goal is to make sure every Cambridge student has the materials they need to finish school projects.

Long Description: While Cambridge Public Schools distributes backpacks of school supplies at Community Fairs each August and September, many families struggle to replenish those materials once they run out during the school year. In addition, families may find it difficult to purchase additional items - such as markers, colored pencils, and glue -  needed for homework and projects. Consistent access to basic supplies is essential for students to complete homework, participate fully in class, and meet learning expectations. To ensure students have what they need throughout the year, we propose using Participatory Budget funding to expand access to school supplies through two pathways:

Mid-Year Backpack Replenishment: Community Fair Backpacks would be refreshed every January with essential items such as pencils, pens, highlighters, folders, and notebooks. This would help ensure that students have the tools they need for continued academic success during the second half of the school year.

Art Supply Lending Boxes: Art supply boxes would be made available for checkout at each school library. These kits would include markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, glue guns, and other materials needed for creative projects and homework assignments completed outside of school. Specific item needs will be determined by teachers and school administrators.

This dual approach - providing both academic and creative supplies - would support equity across Cambridge by reducing financial barriers and ensuring that all students can participate fully in learning throughout the entire year.
