Every year, June is proclaimed Month of Portuguese Heritage in Massachusetts. Join us for a free concert at the Main Library in celebration of Portuguese Heritage Month. The concert will feature a jazz quartet performing works by Carlos Paredes and other Portuguese composers. Carlos Paredes (1925 – 2004), the most renowned Portuguese guitar composer, maintained significant artistic dialogues with other musical genres. Amongst his most important collaborations was an album recorded together with jazz musician Charlie Haden. The concert will also be a tribute to Paredes’ work on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The band consists of Tim Pascoal on piano; Gen Yoshimura on Drums; and Youngchae on upright bass. The performance will also feature Francisco Pais Cardoso on Guitar. A reception with Portuguese pastries will follow the concert. This event is cosponsored by the Cambridge Public Library and the Consulate General of Portugal in Boston, with the support of Camoes – Institute for Cooperation and Language (Portugal). Join Tessa Bachi Haas, ICA/Boston Assistant Curator, for a deep dive into Stanley Whitney: How High the Moon, the first retrospective to trace the evolution of Stanley Whitney’s unique and powerful abstractions. In this talk, discover how Whitney developed his iconic gridded format and explore 50 years of powerful, color-saturated painting. Stanley Whitney: How High the Moon is on view at ICA/Boston now through September 1, 2025. The exhibition organized by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum and curated by Cathleen Chaffee, Charles Balbach Chief Curator, Buffalo AKG Art Museum. The ICA/Boston’s presentation is organized by Ruth Erickson, Barbara Lee Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, with Tessa Bachi Haas, Assistant Curator. This is a hybrid event. Harvard Book Store and the Cambridge Public Library welcome Molly Jong-Fast—contributing writer at Vanity Fair, political analyst at MSNBC News, and host of the podcast “Fast Politics”—for a discussion of her new book How to Lose Your Mother: A Daughter's Memoir. She will be joined in conversation by Laura Zigman—author of six novels, including the bestsellers Small World, Separation Anxiety, and Animal Husbandry. Registration is required.

The purpose of this survey is to hear from community members about their experiences and their ideas and hopes for LGBTQ+ friendly housing and spaces in Cambridge. This survey is open to any LGBTQ+ person who has lived in Cambridge or currently lives in Cambridge. Survey responses are anonymous. The survey results will be used to inform the recommendations provided by the LGBTQ+ Housing Task Force. The survey will be open February 6-16, 2024.

Design Your Own Space Mission Patch! Young space enthusiasts are invited to imagine and create their own space mission patch, just like real astronauts! Using circular templates, markers, and space-themed stickers, children will dream up their own space missions: Will they fly to Mars? Visit a distant galaxy? Search for alien life? Each child will choose a mission goal, name their spacecraft, and design a patch that tells the story of their adventure. As they draw, children will hear inspiring stories about real-life women astronauts, encouraging early interest in space careers and diverse role models in STEM. Finished patches will be displayed during the event to celebrate their creativity and curiosity. Recommended for children in grades K-5. This special activity is part of Massachusetts STEM Week 2025 and is organized by The Space Consortium, the local space education and outreach nonprofit behind Massachusetts Space Week (April 20-26 2026).

Participatory Budgeting is a democratic process that empowers community members to decide how to spend part of a public budget. In June and July 2022, community members submitted 1,320 ideas on how to spend $1 million of the City of Cambridge’s FY24 Capital Budget. From August to November, over 70 volunteer PB Delegates worked on five committees to research and evaluate those ideas and develop 20 final proposals for the PB ballot.

In stressful times, collage can be a powerful practice for well-being and resilience. Join local artist Elena Stone to create collages in a relaxing, fun, and reflective community setting. We will use simple materials and a lightly structured process to promote creativity and connection. Materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own collage papers (e.g. old magazines, calendars, wrapping paper, etc.) to share. Registration is encouraged but not required.
