The City of Cambridge has added its first Mack LR Electric trash collection truck to the City’s fleet, marking another critical step in helping the City meet its larger climate action and emissions reduction goals. This Mack LR Electric truck is the first fully electric trash truck in operation in Cambridge.

On March 31, Governor Baker extended the stay-at-home advisory and non-essential business closure that was set to expire on April 7 until May 4, the same date that schools are to remain closed until. Thanks to an innovative partnership among multiple local institutions and a new wind power project in North Dakota, all of the electricity used by Cambridge city buildings, schools and operations will be 100% carbon neutral starting in 2026.

Applications to the Fuel Assistance Program, which helps low-income residents pay their winter heating bills, will be accepted through May 10.

Last winter’s colder-than-normal temperatures sent gas heating bills soaring versus prior years. Now, following a proposed winter gas rate increase, the City of Cambridge is urging residents to act early to plan ahead and research how they can cut costs and prepare for colder weather.
