Safety Improvement Project on Cambridge Street Open House
In 2024, the City of Cambridge plans to install quick-build separated bike lanes and make related safety improvements on Cambridge Street between Inman Square and Second Street. We will start by introducing the project and gathering feedback that will help us draft designs for the street.

2025 Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards Ceremony (Main)
Join the Cambridge Public Library in celebrating the winners and honorees of the 2025 Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards! First presented in 1967, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards celebrate excellence in children’s and young adult literature. The 2025 winners and honorees “represent such a wide range of what books for young people can be and say,” writes Elissa Gershowitz, Editor in Chief of The Horn Book, Inc. “Especially at a time when creative voices are being threatened and silenced, we are proud to recognize children’s book creators whose work is so uniquely their own.” A book signing will follow the Awards Ceremony. Books will be available for purchase on-site. Registration is required.
New Role Integrates a Mental Health Professional with Dispatchers
In 2023, the City of Cambridge designated a new position within the Emergency Communications Department; a 911 Call Center Clinician. This is a new, unique public safety position as it places a mental health professional directly inside the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) alongside dispatchers.
Apply for an Annual Sidewalk Business Use Permit
A business use sidewalk obstruction permit is required if you are a business in the City of Cambridge and want to use an “A” framed sign, sandwich board, display merchandise, temporary banner or use tables and chairs on a sidewalk in the public way.
Clothing & Textiles Recycling
The City of Cambridge offers free weekly curbside textiles collection, as well as drop-off bins at select locations. To schedule your free pick-up, use the Clothing/Textiles Collection tool below. Approximately, 95% of textiles and accessories could be reused/repurposed. This initiative supports the city's goals of reducing waste and is launched in accordance with recommendations from the City's Zero Waste Master Plan.

CPL Nature Club: Fairy Walk at Bergin Park (O'Neill)
We invite children and their grown-ups to join us for a magical walk through nature. We will look for signs of fairies and build fairy houses. We will meet at Gerard Bergin Park (Haskell & Pemberton Streets), a short walk from the O'Neill Branch. In case of bad weather, this program will happen indoors at the O'Neill Branch.
Senior Discount Water/Sewer Application
Because of the impact the water and sewer rate increases may have on senior citizens, the City offers a Senior Discount Water/Sewer program. All residents 65 years of age or older who own and occupy their one, two, or three family home are eligible for a 15% discount on water/sewer charges, not to exceed $90 per year.
Shop for Free with The Spot: Prom Day
Join the Spot Cambridge and the Cambridge Public Library for its Shop for Free: Prom Day event. A wide range of dresses, suits, and accessories suitable for Prom will be available. All clothing and accessories are free of charge. No registration is required. All high school students, regardless of school attended or city of residence, are welcome to come Shop for Free.
