In March 2024, the City Council passed Policy Order 2024 #37, which asked the Community Development Department “to work with the chairs of the Housing Committee to create zoning language that effectively promotes multifamily housing, including income-restricted affordable housing with the goal of having viable housing for everyone especially lower-income residents.” A series of Housing Committee meetings will be held to discuss the proposal throughout the summer and fall of 2024. Additional information will be posted here as the proposal is developed.

Join Navigation Games for Leprechaun Orienteering, a free and fun outdoor event for all ages at Kingsley Park in Fresh Pond Reservation. The Cambridge Water Department (CWD) wants to make the Cambridge community aware of the latest water drought status. Last week, the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) changed the Cambridge drought level status to Level 2 (Significant Drought). In response to the ongoing drought, Cambridge has implemented strict water use restrictions.

In order to develop Cambridge Crossing, DivcoWest was required to make improvements to Monsignor O’Brien Highway from Third Street to Museum Way. These improvements have included subsurface and surface infrastructure upgrades. This section of Monsignor O’Brien Highway is being transformed from a highway into a tree lined boulevard with bicycle lanes/cycle tracks, new sidewalks and significantly improved pedestrian crossings. Due to the construction associated with the MBTA’s Green Line Extension (GLX) Project, these improvements have been phased over several years.

The City of Cambridge and members of the local Massachusett tribe will unveil newly installed street signs in East Cambridge that will be presented in both the Massachusett and English languages. The special event will take place on Friday, November 29 at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Third Street and Binney Street in East Cambridge (Parcel 6).

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” is in order of importance. It is better to reduce than reuse; better to reuse than recycle. Reducing and reusing prevent the environmental impact of making new items. All disposal has financial costs to the city. Recycling and composting cost the City less than trash. Still, preventing waste in the first place is best for Cambridge and the environment. It is one of the key recommendations in the Cambridge Zero Waste Master Plan.
