City of Cambridge offices, libraries, and senior centers will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr Holiday.

The high temperatures and humidity in the summer can result in peak demand on New England’s electricity supply, especially during extreme heat, which can have air conditioners and fans working overtime.

Curbside collection of trash, recycling, compost, and yard waste will not be affected and will remain on its regular schedule for this holiday. Regularly scheduled street cleaning routes for Friday, November 10 will be cleaned on Monday, October 30.

In observance of the Veterans’ Day holiday on Friday, November 11, City of Cambridge offices, libraries, and senior centers will be closed and payments will not be required at City of Cambridge parking meters and parking meter pay stations. Additionally, the offices at Cambridge Cemetery, 76 Coolidge Avenue, will be closed on the holiday, though the gates will be open from 7 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Curbside collection of trash, recycling, compost, and yard waste will be suspended on the holiday and one day behind schedule. Regularly scheduled street cleaning routes for Friday, November 11 will be cleaned on Monday, October 31.

Beginning April 3, 2023, the City of Cambridge will implement a one-year street cleaning pilot program designed to evaluate the effectiveness of its street cleaning operations, while seeking to reduce the impacts of towing on residents. During this pilot program, towing associated with street cleaning will not be enforced, though residents should continue to move their vehicles accordingly, following the posted street cleaning schedule. Additionally, parking tickets issued for street cleaning will be raised from $30 to $50.

This year, the Cambridge Department of Public Works will recognize 4 employees who demonstrated exemplary work performance with the presentation of the "Commissioner's Award for Outstanding Performance" at a ceremony on Wednesday, May 21, at Public Works.

Christmas Holiday closure information for the City of Cambridge

Beginning October 17th, weather permitting, the City’s contractor, E J Paving, will be performing partial roadway grinding and paving operations to enhance the road conditions on several sections of street around the City. The roadway grinding operation at each location is expected take two days followed by paving of the roadway later that same week, or the following week (weather permitting). The City of Cambridge announced today plans to restore the exterior façade of the historic City Hall. Cambridge has a rich history, and the landmark City Hall building is a significant part of that story. The 15-month restoration project will preserve Cambridge City Hall's historic character. Work includes gilding at the clock tower, originally manufactured by the E. Howard Watch & Clock Company of Waltham. The clock is original to the building and was last restored 20 years ago. To this day, it is still wound by hand once a week.
