Ongoing Cambridge policies and legislation have steadily improved the environment for biking in the City. That includes 2016 Vision Zero Policy, 2016 Complete Streets Policy, and the 2019 Cambridge Cycling Safety Ordinance (including 2020 amendments). The City has expanded the number of bike lanes, and more people are biking in Cambridge now than ever recorded before. Bluebikes use in the City is at a record high, and the Citywide bike crash rate has decreased by 41% since 2004. Also since that year, bike network lane-miles increased by 128%.
Cambridge has taken deliberate steps to make mass transit more accessible and comfortable. The City has improved bus infrastructure, expanded shuttle options, invested in regional transit collaborations, and redesigned streets to prioritize transit reliability.
Electric Vehicles (EVs) create less greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution than traditional gasoline-fueled vehicles. EV drivers benefit from better fuel economy and financial incentives, and contribute to cleaner air and better health for the community. Cambridge has rapidly increased the number of EV charging stations in the City, including curbside, municipal lot, and garage‑based chargers. To improve turnover and availability of chargers Cambridge introduced EV charging overstay fees.
On February 21, 2023, the City issued a citywide Clean Fleet Policy to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. The policy contains greenhouse gas emission targets, acquisition guidelines and a plan for the installation of charging stations and electrical infrastructure. While working to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, the policy also ensures that vehicles will be able to perform the necessary functions such as 24/7 snow operations, have repair shop capability in the Boston region and have charging infrastructure available.As a governmental entity, the Massachusetts Public Records Law applies to records made or received by the City.
