Mock up of what Hampshire Street will look like with separated bike lanes. The image shows the block between Cardinal Medeiros and Broadway.

Work to Install Separated Bike Lanes on Hampshire Street Begins August 21

The City of Cambridge will begin installing separated bike lanes on Hampshire Street and one block of Broadway on Monday, August 21, as part of the Hampshire Street Safety Improvement Project

Diagram shows sidewalk, bike lane, parking lane, two travel lanes, another bike lane, and another sidewalk from the side.
Pavement Markings

Crews will begin to add new pavement markings to the street overnight on August 21 (weather permitting). Markings will include crosswalks, lane lines, bus stops, and new separated bike lanes. Bike lanes will be against the curb (next to the sidewalk) on both sides of the street. They will be separated from parking and travel lanes with white flex posts.

During pavement marking work, there will be temporary overnight parking restrictions. Temporary paper "No Parking" signs will indicate the days and times that parking is not allowed.

Permanent Parking Changes

When separated bike lanes are installed, parking along Hampshire Street will be significantly reduced. In most areas of Hampshire Street, there will be parking on one side of the street. Bike lanes will be between parked cars and the curb.

Crews will change metal signs on Hampshire Street on Monday, August 21. These will indicate the new parking layout (shown on the image below). Visit the project website for more details on parking

Map shows parking layout on Hampshire Street beginning August 21, 2023. Includes loading zones, accessible parking, 1 and 2-hour metered spaces, 30 minute non-metered parking, permit parking only spaces, and spaces that are part-time unrestricted, part-time permit required.

Other Changes

This project will also include:

  • Changes to bus stop locations beginning August 21. New locations will have more typical stop spacing, riders boarding the bus will face fewer barriers, and it will be easier to deploy boarding ramps.
  • Improvements to existing crosswalks. New pavement markings will make crosswalks more visible, tighten corners to slow turning drivers, and shift general traffic lanes to reduce driver blind spots.
  • A traffic pattern change at the Hampshire Street/Broadway intersection beginning the week of August 21. Vehicles leaving Hampshire Street will only be able to turn left on Broadway, and will no longer be allowed to turn right or go straight.

Visit the project webpage for more details on these changes.

Next Steps

After pavement markings are complete, the City will add flex posts to separate bike lanes from traffic and parking lanes. Sign up for the project email list for updates on future work.

About the Hampshire Street Safety Improvement Project

When this project is installed, Hampshire Street will have separated bike lanes connecting Inman Square all the way to Broadway. This "quick-build" project will change the layout of the street with new pavement markings, signs, and flex posts.

Between November 2022 and June 2023, the City solicited feedback on the Hampshire Street Safety Improvement Project through three online community meetings, two in-person open houses, a comment map, design options survey, and one-on-one conversations with residents, business owners, and other stakeholders. Read materials from these meetings and watch recordings on the project webpage

This project helps the City of Cambridge meet the requirements of the Cycling Safety Ordinance, which mandates the installation of 25 miles of separated bike lanes by approximately 2026. These lanes increase comfort for people biking by using a physical barrier or curb to separate them from vehicles.

Hampshire Street is a key piece in the City of Cambridge’s plan for a safe, connected bicycle network. The City’s goal is to encourage more people to bike and increase safety by building a network of separated lanes, connecting important destinations throughout Cambridge. Safer, more comfortable bike infrastructure helps us get closer to “Vision Zero”—our commitment to eliminating transportation-related deaths and serious injuries while increasing healthy, equitable mobility for all.
