Greenhouse Gas Inventory
To understand our impact on climate change and measure progress over time, Cambridge has committed to doing a greenhouse gas inventory of its emissions at least every five years. This information helps the City understand where emissions are coming from, identify the biggest opportunities to reduce them, and guide the policies and programs that support our goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
Sustainability
Sustainability initiatives the DPW is taking to support the City's goals of energy and greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
Clean Energy Cambridge
How Cambridge is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 by transitioning to clean energy.
Aggressive City Goals
The City has set aggressive goals and implemented a series of actions in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to a) prevent climate change from worsening b) and address the inevitable impacts of climate change that we are already experiencing in order to improve the health and resilience of the community.
Plans and Policies
Cambridge has carefully planned and created policies that gave the City a unified roadmap and enforceable standards to cut building greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, reduce waste and electrify transportation, and harden infrastructure citywide. They also institutionalized accountability for measurable outcomes.
BEUDO
The Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance lays out steps for non-residential buildings 100,000 square feet or larger to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, and for non-residential buildings with more than 25,000 square feet to reach net zero by 2050.
Buildings
Cambridge has regulations that require buildings to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, be fossil fuel free, be energy efficient, improve resiliency, and prepare for the impacts of climate change. The City is also holding itself to the same standards by making municipal buildings green.
