PARK(ing) Day 2017 Call for Spots now open!
Join us for an information session on April 19th to learn all about PARK(ing) Day. This informational drop-in session is intended to answer any questions you may have about hosting a PARK(ing) Day spot. Drop in at any point between 4 P.M. and 7 P.M.
Register by June 16, 2017 to be included in the largest PARK(ing) Day celebration in the world as we take over 120 parking spots.
The Cambridge Community Development Department (CDD) seeks creative folks to participate in the official City of Cambridge PARK(ing) Day celebration, an international event in which metered parking spaces are transformed into “parks” for a day. Previous years have brought many creative ideas, including: gymnastics studios, bicycle-powered smoothies, living rooms, dance floors, parks, nature preserves, games, dog parks, libraries, bike lanes, and concerts.
The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out! Who can participate?
Any community group, organization, City department, or business that “sponsors” a metered parking spot and will create a small park in that space.
What do you need to do to host a PARK(ing) Day spot?
The City of Cambridge will...
- Secure all traffic-related permits for use of the parking space.
- Promote event via Facebook, Twitter, City websites.
- Create a PARK(ing) Day Map of Cambridge parking spots.
Criteria for obtaining a parking space
- Your display must be wholly contained within a parking space.
- You must provide a barrier (cones, potted plants, bollards, fence, rope line, etc.) separating the space from the travel lane and vehicle parking spaces. This is absolutely critical to participation. Please ensure that your plans include a description of the barrier.
- Activities are very important (even if that activity is sitting under a tree and reading a book)
- Spots should be open to the sidewalk and should feel welcoming for people to enter
- The roadway shall not be impacted (i.e. no drilling or nailing into the roadway).
- No commercial activities are permitted (i.e. selling food, drink, etc.), although seated spaces for consumption of food/drink is permitted.
- No alcoholic beverages are permitted.
- No cooking, grilling, fires or flames are permitted within the parking space.
- Anything associated with the display may not extend out of the parking space (i.e. No electrical extension cords extending over the public sidewalk).
- Spots cannot be political in nature.
- Participants are responsible for
- Sticking to the rough plan that they have outlined in their proposal
- The spot must be completely set-up no later than 8am
- There must be a barrier between traffic and the spot
- Tracking the approximate number of visitors to the spot
- Activities must be people-powered all day
- Cleaning up no later than 7pm* so that the space is as it was when they arrived.

- Abiding by the City of Cambridge restrictions set forth above.
- Additional promotion of event via your personal/business network, including social media
