    • STEAM Academy: Innovators for Purpose Summer Studio

      Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects. July 5 - August 5, weekdays from 9:15am-3:30pm at the Main Library Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences. Made possible by generous support from the Eric and Jane Nord Family Fund and Verizon.

    • Glowforge 101: Creative Laser Cutting, Pt.2 (Main)

      Learn how to cut, engrave, and shape designs from a variety of materials using the Glowforge Pro laser cutter in this 2-day workshop. This series of workshops replaces the previous Glowforge 101 and Glowforge 201 offerings. In part 1 of this course, you will utilize the camera for focusing and scanning your own custom images, properly select materials for your project, and fabricate your first design. In part 2, you will create digital artwork for the Glowforge, and learn file formatting for production. Note: This is a badging course for laser cutting. Signing up for part 1 of this series registers you to participate in part 2 the next day. You will be badged at the end of the part 2 workshop, and are able to reserve the Glowforge Pro for use during designated times.       Join Cambridge Arts for a free Bike Tour of Public Art in Cambridgeport and Riverside on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. in partnership with the Cambridge Public Library. The tour will begin and end at the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza at 237 Franklin St., just outside of the Central Square branch library. The ride is about 3.5 miles long, with stops to talk about the art. Bicyclists of all ages are encouraged to attend. Register to help us know how many people to expect: https://forms.gle/qUayzMeHtPD8KkVF9 The art on the tour addresses civil rights, community activism, wildlife in Cambridge, and other themes. Around the library and Green Street parking garage, we’ll see mosaics by Lilli Ann Rosenberg; a stairway installation by Edwin Andrews; murals by Cedric Douglas and Silvia López Chavez; graphics by John Powell; and a poem by Benjamin Tolkin. Then bike to Vusumuzi Maduna's restored "Inner City Totem I" at the Cambridge Community Center; recently refreshed William Reimann granite carvings at Corporal Burns Park; Bernard LaCasse's restored "Beat the Belt" mural on Micro Center; David Fichter's mural on Trader Joe's; and Vivian Beer's restored “Thunderhead” bench at David Nunes Park. All riders are strongly encouraged to wear helmets. The tour is expected to take about an hour and a half. Cambridge Police will join us to assist at major intersections. Refreshments will be served at the end of the tour.
