    • The Uncompromising Political Career of Alice K. Wolf

      On Display August 14 - September 10 Lobby & Second Floor, Main Library Alice K. Wolf represented the city of Cambridge on the School Committee, City Council, as Mayor, and as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Her 40-year career as a public servant was a testament to progressive ideals and equity and fairness in government. Join us for a tribute to Alice Wolf on September 9th at 2 pm.

      Put on your dancing shoes and head over for a morning of singing and dancing! We'll sing and move together, and share a story or two. For children of all ages and their grown-ups. This program will take place in the Community Room at the Valente Branch Library. If the weather is particularly fine, the program may move outside to the Valente Reading Garden on Berkshire Street.     • Sewing 101 (Main)

      Main Library, 449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02138

      In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

    • Summer Reading: Talewise presents Science Heroes: Saving Earth Together (Valente)

      In this action-packed story, two unlikely heroes work together to save their town (and the planet) from a super-polluting mastermind! Throughout the adventure, volunteers will help the performer conduct several exciting science experiments that bring this story to life! Together we’ll explore Newton’s Laws of Motion, air pressure, chemical reactions and more! Recommended for children ages 5 and up and their caregivers. Funding for Summer Reading has been generously provided by the City of Cambridge, Cambridge Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Cambridge Public Library, the East Cambridge Savings Bank and Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

    • Lawrence Millman on Fungi and Foraging (Collins)

      Collins Branch, 64 Aberdeen Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138

      Join local mycologist Lawrence Millman for an educational reading and discussion from his new book, Foraging with Jeeves (May 2023). This book of essays and stories defy any genre, just as fungi often tend to defy our attempts to identify them. Think science (the Salem witchcraft fungus) followed by satire (a fungal Faust) followed by an account of what sorts of fungi we might find in Antartica. Millman is also the author of Fascinating Fungi of New England, the first guidebook dedicated to understanding New England mushrooms. This event is now full. Registration is closed.
