City of Cambridge Seeks Community Feedback on Central Square Safety Improvement Project

The City of Cambridge is looking for your thoughts as we prepare draft designs for the Central Square Safety Improvement Project.

The Central Square Safety Improvement Project will add separated bike lanes and make other safety improvements in Central Square on Mass Ave between Inman Street and Sidney Street. This quick-build project will change the layout of the street with new pavement markings, modified traffic signals, minor curb and sidewalk work, and flex posts.

What Changes Are Planned?

  • Add separated bike lanes:

  • Move bike lanes to be along the curb

  • Add white flex posts to physically separate them from moving vehicles

  • Make improvements for people walking:

  • Shorten crossing distances for people walking

  • Change signal timing to improve crossing the street.

  • Improve transit access:

  • Coordinate with the MBTA on an MBTA lead project to improve and renovate the station.

  • City is leading changes to improve bus circulation and access

  • Reduce on-street parking:

  • The design is still being finalized, but we expect to keep about 75% of current curbside space for loading and parking.

  • Facilitate and accommodate outdoor dining:

  • Improvements to outdoor dining, including how bike lanes are routed through areas with dining.

These changes will help us meet the requirements of the
Cambridge Cycling Safety Ordinance, support our Vision Zero goal to eliminate crashes resulting in fatalities and serious injuries, and bring us closer to realizing the Cambridge Bicycle Network Vision.

The City already has an idea what the street will look like. This is based on feedback from relevant groups like the MBTA and the Central Square Business District. Now we want your feedback.

We Want to Hear From You!
