We plan to have our Tuesday discussion about today’s materials! “If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.” - Combahee River Collective, April 1977 This event is part 1 of 4 of our reading group to discuss How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. We will read and discuss the book in sections as follows: Session 1 - Intro, Barbara Smith Session 2 - Beverly Smith, Demita Frazier Session 3 - Alicia Garza, Angela Davis, comments Session 4 – Reflections on Cambridge present and future Participants are encouraged to come to as many sessions as they can — and all are welcome! Copies of the book are available for pickup at the Central Square Branch. This event was created in partnership with Community Conversations: Sister to Sister, the Cambridge LGBTQ+ Commission, and the Cambridge Women’s Commission.

The goal of this Committee is to work with City staff to develop recommendations on how the City can better assist BIPOC-owned businesses. The Committee will be a sounding board for ideas on strengthening the City’s outreach efforts, information-sharing, business programs and policies, and overall relationship with local BIPOC-owned businesses.

Join Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery—a writer, science communicator, and plant biologist—for a wide-ranging discussion of her new book, When Trees Testify: Science, Wisdom, History, and America’s Black Botanical Legacy. The event will be moderated by Tracy K. Smith, a two-term U.S. Poet Laureate and the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University. Registration is required. In advance of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the holiday shopping season, the Cambridge Police Department once again expects reports of package thefts to increase over the coming weeks, particularly with more residents doing their shopping online.

The Office of Sustainability (OoS) was created in July 2024 to institutionalize climate actions across all City departments. Cambridge’s first Chief Climate Officer began work in October 2024. The OoS is built on nearly two decades of efforts by multiple departments to reduce Cambridge's reliance on fossil fuels and prepare for extreme weather.

The Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance lays out steps for non-residential buildings 100,000 square feet or larger to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, and for non-residential buildings with more than 25,000 square feet to reach net zero by 2050.
