Bicycling magazine has named Cambridge the 8th best city for biking in the United States, as part of the 2016 edition of its biennial list of The 50 Best Bike Cities.

Bicycling cited Cambridge’s high quality street design (specifically protected bike lanes and traffic calming), impressive bicycle commuting statistics, advanced bicycle parking initiatives, and public events, like the biannual Bicycle Committee community bike rides, among its reasons for the high score.

Also notable, Bicycling highlighted that forty-four percent of all Cambridge bike commuters are female, the highest percentage of the top ten cities in the survey. A high percentage of female bikers is a strong indicator of safe cycling infrastructure.

While 8th overall in the nation, Cambridge is the highest rated small city on the list, and one of only two in the top ten (Boulder, CO came in at #10).

The Western Avenue protected bike lane was named the United States' best new bike lane of 2015 by People for Bikes.
