New Ordinance in Effect on 3-22-24 Requires New Construction and Major Renovation Projects to be Fossil Fuel-Free

The Cambridge Fossil Fuel-Free Ordinance, which goes in effect March 22, 2024, requires new construction and major renovation projects to be fossil fuel-free. This applies to residential and non-residential building projects.

Changes to the New Construction Building permit and Addition/Alteration permits will reflect the requirements of the Fossil Fuel-Free Ordinance. The Fossil Fuel-Free Ordinance will help Cambridge reach its climate goals, including being carbon-neutral by 2050 or earlier.

For more information on the City’s climate goals, view the Net Zero Action Plan.
