According CB Insights, a New York data services firm, Cambridge now officially the leader in venture capital investment in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As CB Insights states, “Massachusetts is the #2 destination for venture capital in the U.S. but within the state, there appears to be a shift happening as cities like Cambridge and Boston steal venture capital share from other destinations like Waltham and Woburn … The clear winner in Massachusetts has been Cambridge with the lead in both VC deals and dollars.”
From Quarter Four of 2011 through Quarter Three of 2012, Cambridge-based investments totaled $991 million in 122 deals. That marked a 5 percent growth and 27 percent rise in deal volume over the four previous quarters. Cambridge dollars would rank it fourth if the City was a state, behind California, Massachusetts and New York. Cambridge deals would rank us fifth if we were a state, behind California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and tied with Colorado.
