Cambridge Offers New Retrofit Advisor Service as Part of Multi-Family Energy Program

The City of Cambridge is launching a Retrofit Advisor service to help multifamily buildings save energy in their homes and save money on their utility bills. As the newest component of the City’s Multifamily Energy Pilot, the no-cost Retrofit Advisor service is designed to help buildings implement energy upgrades. The Multifamily Energy Pilot, which launched in April 2017, has assisted over 1300 Cambridge households with improving energy efficiency.

By signing up for the Multifamily Energy Pilot, buildings can receive a no-cost energy assessment from the their utility company and a no-cost solar assessment from Sunny Cambridge, Cambridge’s solar program. The energy assessment also identifies the incentives that buildings can access for upgrades like insulation, air sealing, and lighting. The Retrofit Advisor will then guide owners and property managers through next steps, including finding a qualified installer, getting bids, and comparing technical information for different energy efficiency options.

Buildings generate over 80% of Cambridge’s total greenhouse gas emissions. By targeting multi-family units, the Cambridge Multi-Family Energy Pilot furthers the City’s mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by mid-century. In addition to environmental benefits, buildings that implement energy-efficient measures can save up to 20% or more of their annual energy costs.

If a tenant or individual unit owner makes the request, the program will reach out to the right contact at the property manager or landlord’s office to get the building assessment started.
