Over 140 bikes new lights in December!

In December, the City of Cambridge, the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School Bike Advocates, the Cambridge and Somerville Bicycle Committees, MassBike and Cambridge Bicycle Safety collaborated to install bike lights for those people without them in Cambridge. Over three nights, partners and staff set up at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and Inman Square, talking with people biking and encouraging installation of lights. 140 people stopped to install front, back, or sets of lights. With varying locations and times, people from all over were attracted to stop by, and many simply stopped to say thank you!

Lamisa, an active cyclist in Cambridge and intern at the Community Development Department, volunteered for the events. "It's important to have lights, especially in the cold weather, because people are always rushing to get to their next location. Better safe than sorry." It gets dark quite early these days - don't forget to bring a bike light with you wherever you go, even if you think it will still be light out when you head back out again.  And remember: it's the law to have a front light and rear reflectors from dusk 'til dawn (though we suggest a rear light instead of a reflector).

If you or someone you know is interested in getting new bike lights installed, stay tuned for more dates at www.cambridgema.gov/bikes
