O'Brien Highway (Route 28) Reconstruction Project

O'Brien Highway was reconstructed from Museum Way to Cambridge Street by the developer of Cambridge Crossing, Divco West.  This work is complete and the developer is responsible for maintenance of the recent improvements. The City of Cambridge Planning Board Permit PB-179 required this reconstruction. 

On O'Brien Highway between Museum Way and Cambridge Street, this reconstruction included:

  • separated bicycle lanes
  • new sidewalks
  • new traffic signal equipment, including bicycle signals
  • trees and landscaping
  • new street lighting

Construction updates

Most construction is now complete. However, some remaining minor construction or street markings will take place in summer 2024.

Construction on the O’Brien Highway Reconstruction will be going on through 2024.

McGrath Highway Resurfacing project

MassDOT is doing maintenance construction on Route 28 in Cambridge and Somerville from Sunday, July 30, 2023 to the end of October 2024. Route 28 is O'Brien Highway in East Cambridge and McGrath Highway in Somerville. This work includes:

  • rebuilding sidewalks and wheelchair ramps
  • building new bus boarding islands
  • repairing bridge and overpass structures (in Somerville)
  • repaving

Construction team will provide detours for sidewalk and lane closures. Some overnight closures may detour traffic to streets in Cambridge.
