Paying for a trip on the MBTA

The MBTA is improving how you pay for a trip by upgrading their fare systems. Recently, the MBTA added several new options for payment types and have upgraded their fare systems to make it easier to use a CharlieCard.

You can now pay with:

  1. Your own contactless debit or credit card or with a mobile wallet on your smartphone or smart watch.
  2. An MBTA CharlieCard - CharlieCards are reusable cards that can be loaded with cash value or passes to pay bus and subway fares.

Read the information below to get information on recent improvements on how to pay for an MBTA fare.

Pay with your own contactless payment

You can pay with your own contactless debit or credit card or with a mobile wallet on your smartphone or smart watch. The MBTA invites the public to "Tap to Ride".
